  • You will be given special drops that will dilate the pupils. This allows the doctor to clearly view the back of the eye, examining the optic nerve, blood vessels, and peripheral retina.

    A dilated exam is part of a comprehensive eye exam. Ask your doctor about whether you will need one during your visit.

  • Your pupils will remain dilated for a while (3-6 hours). Your vision will be blurry, especially for up close work, and you will be sensitive to light. After the exam, you should wear dark sunglasses for protection, and it's recommended that you do not drive. If you need to, have someone drive you home.
